Steroid tablets

If you are taking steroids, the current advice is to continue to do so. Contact your GP to discuss it if you develop the symptoms of COVID-19, when they may alter your dose.   • Accidentally taking 1 extra dose of your antibiotic is unlikely to cause you any serious harm.

New evidence available on corticosteroids added to antibiotics in severe pneumonia

Around 5 out of every 100 people (around 5%) experience serious mental health problems when they take steroids. Let your healthcare team know if you notice any changes in your emotional or psychological wellbeing. Also let them know if you or any family members have ever had depression or manic depression (bipolar disorder). Inhaled steroids and antibiotics are often stickier than standard nebuliser medication and can take longer to nebulise.

If you need to take medication for diabetes with corticosteroids, your blood glucose levels will usually need to be checked more regularly. Your dose may need to be reduced slowly over a few weeks or months. If you’ve been taking corticosteroids for a while, you may also need tests before you stop taking them. These will make sure that your adrenal glands are still working properly.

Short courses of steroid tablets

The SideStream Plus and the Pari LC Sprint are both systems which are breath activated. This means you receive more medication when you breathe in and waste less when breathing out, but this does mean getting used to a mouthpiece. If this does prove tricky then you could choose a high pressure machine but you may run the risk of environmental contamination.

But it will increase your chances of getting side effects, such as pain in your stomach, diarrhoea, and feeling or being sick. If you forget to take a dose of your antibiotics, take that dose as soon as you remember and then continue to take your course of antibiotics as normal. When it comes to antibiotics, take your doctor’s advice on whether you need them or not.

Will steroids affect my bone health?

This systematic review included 13 randomised controlled trials, with 2,005 participants. It updated and added to a 2011 review with a further nine trials. All the studies compared add-on treatment with corticosteroid (such as dexamethasone, prednisolone or hydrocortisone) with inactive placebo treatment. All the patients were receiving antibiotics as the main treatment for their pneumonia.
