Check for corticosteroid side effect risk including the risk of adrenal suppression and where necessary advise the patient to carry a steroid card (this includes high to medium-dose inhaled steroids as well as oral corticosteroids). Recent studies have shown that in house dust mite allergic asthmatics who have allergic rhinitis, house dust mite tablet immunotherapy is effective for reducing corticosteroids and for preventing asthma exacerbations. At present, house dust mite tablet immunotherapy should only be given to those asthmatics whose asthma is either well-controlled or at least partially controlled, in order to reduce the risk of systemic side effects.

Corticosteroids can also be used to replace certain hormones that aren’t naturally produced by the body. Corticosteroids, often known as steroids, are an anti-inflammatory medicine. If your child is sick again, seek advice from your family doctor, nurse, pharmacist, or hospital. They will decide what to do based on your child’s condition and the specific medicine involved.

What corticosteroids are used for

Steroids that are injected into muscles and joints may cause some pain and swelling at the site of the injection. Please take time to read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine. If you think someone else may have taken the medicine by accident, contact your doctor straight away.

  • This is because after taking steroids for a long time, your body may not produce enough natural corticosteroids, which can lead to a condition known as adrenal suppression, also known as adrenal insufficiency.
  • If you’ve been prescribed steroids, whether as tablets, liquid or in an inhaler, make sure you take them every day as prescribed.
  • The study was published by the Cochrane Collaboration – an independent research body looking at the effects of healthcare treatments.
  • Adrenal crisis can happen if they do not know to keep giving you steroids.

Steroid inhalers usually cause few or no side effects if used correctly and at normal doses. This can help avoid unpleasant side effects (withdrawal symptoms), such as severe tiredness, joint pain, being sick and dizziness. Using a steroid inhaler too much over a long period can increase your chances of getting side effects.

Will steroids affect my bone health?

This systematic review has found that inhaled corticosteroid drugs suppress growth in children with persistent asthma who take them regularly, during the first year of treatment. Temporarily increasing the dosage of inhaled steroids when asthma symptoms begin to worsen does not effectively prevent severe flare-ups, according to US researchers. This review pooled data from studies of people with mild asthma, aged 12 and over. The studies lasted at least 12 weeks and were carried out all over the world.

About the University

However asthma patients aged over 50 years old who used inhaled steroids within two weeks of their hospital admission had a reduced risk of death, compared to patients without a known lung condition. If your child has severe asthma, taking prednisolone regularly will help prevent asthma attacks and control symptoms such as wheezing. If your child has had an asthma attack, your doctor may suggest that they take a high dose of prednisolone for a few days, to help them recover. Prednisolone is usually used alongside other asthma treatments such as inhalers.

If you want to check that your medicines are safe to take with your medication, ask your Pharmacist or GP. If you have troublesome side effects, don’t stop taking your medication until your doctor says it’s safe to do so. Steroids that are injected into a blood vessel (intravenous steroids) may cause more widespread side effects.

Oral corticosteroid side effects

The protective effect of inhaled steroids was not found in patients with a non-asthma chronic lung condition (like COPD). Asthma is a common lung condition that causes breathing difficulties. Even people with mild asthma experience occasional wheezing, tightness of the chest and breathlessness.

They do this by treating inflammation in your airways (this is when your airways are swollen and narrow). The research showed that severe asthmatics with allergies were ten times more likely to carry higher levels of mould when on corticosteroid treatment. The new metric looks at patients in England who have been prescribed prednisolone tablets, as well as an asthma/COPD medication in the last 12 months.
